Using ModMate with Ableton

Like Cubase, Ableton doesn’t actually support third-party VST MIDI effects, but it does provide a way to make them work. The basic technique is described here: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209070189-Accessing-the-MIDI-output-of-a-VST-plug-in, but I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version.

What you need to do is to put ModMate onto a MIDI track all by itself, and then set the MIDI From menus of your instrument tracks (i.e., your Omnisphere 2 MIDI tracks) to receive MIDI from ModMate. I also found that I had to set my instrument track’s Monitor setting to “In” (not “Auto”) or I didn’t hear any sound.

Here’s what this setup looks like on my screen. Track 1 is the instrument track—note I was using Blue 2, because I don’t have Omnisphere on this PC. Track 2 is a second MIDI track with only ModMate on it. Look at the red-outlined part of the image, to see how I set up Track 1:
